Kumeu River Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay 2025 750ml
Maté's Vineyard is the flagship of Kumeu River and one of the most celebrated single vineyards in New Zealand. Named for Maté Brajkovich, who established the family's holdings at Kumeu north west of Auckland, the site was planted in 1990 and has been bottled on its own since 1993. It sits on heavier clay soils that give the wine its depth and its unmistakable power.
Winemaking follows the same Burgundian path as the rest of the range. The fruit is hand picked and whole bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeasts in French oak barriques, then matured on lees with full malolactic fermentation to build texture and complexity.
This is the fullest and most powerful of the family's single vineyard Chardonnays. Look for honeysuckle and white blossom, ripe pear and yellow stone fruit, with flint, struck match and a touch of vanilla bean adding layers underneath. The palate is mouthfilling and tightly wound, with a phenolic grip and a long, savoury finish. Worth decanting, and a wine that will continue to build in the cellar for many years.
