Les Damodes lies at the far northern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges, high on the slope right against the Vosne-Romanée boundary, and it tastes like it. Where Nuits typically means sturdy, earthy, tightly wound Pinot Noir, Damodes leans towards the perfume and silkiness of its neighbour, offering one of the most graceful readings of the commune.
Red cherry, wild strawberry and violet dominate the nose, with a fine dusting of woodland spice and forest floor behind. The palate is medium bodied and elegantly proportioned, with fine chalky tannins, bright acidity and a long, savoury finish that shows the Nuits backbone underneath the Vosne perfume.
Pierre-Vincent Girardin, thirteenth generation of a Burgundy winemaking family, founded his estate at Meursault in 2016 and released his first wine at nineteen. His reds are made with the same restraint as his whites, using natural ferments and large format barrels to keep new oak from obscuring the site.
