Luigi Baudana is a small estate at the northern end of Serralunga d'Alba, where the Baudana family farmed for generations. When Luigi and his wife Fiorina approached retirement, they passed the property to the Vaira family of G.D. Vajra in 2009, on the condition that the Baudana name stay on the labels and that Luigi keep advising on the vineyards and the cellar.
The Baudana vineyard itself lies on the western slope of Serralunga, facing south to south west on the commune's calcareous marl soils. The Nebbiolo is fermented traditionally and then aged in large oak casks for the long period that Barolo requires before release.
The wine is structured and perfumed in the Serralunga mould: sour cherry, rose petal, tar, liquorice and dried herbs, with firm tannins that turn velvety with time. It benefits from several years in bottle and drinks well for fifteen years and more after that.
