Lake's Folly is a Hunter Valley estate in New South Wales, established in 1963 by Doctor Max Lake (a renowned hand surgeon, author and wine industry stalwart) as the first new vineyard planted in the region in the twentieth century, and Australia's first boutique winery. In 2000 the estate was purchased by Peter and Lee Fogarty and family, with Hunter-born winemaker Rodney Kempe at the helm, continuing Max's legacy of restrained, elegant estate-grown wines made in limited quantities.
Lake's Folly Chardonnay, made from estate vines first planted by Max Lake in the 1970s, is one of Australia's most collected Chardonnays. The winemaking is deliberately simple: hand picking, gentle crushing, barrel fermentation and extended yeast lees contact, all designed to express the elegance and clarity of the home vineyard. The wine is restrained and finely drawn, with stone fruit, citrus, white flowers and a touch of struck flint carrying through a long, structured palate.
The wines are made entirely from estate-grown, hand-picked fruit, vinified and bottled on site. Total production hovers around 4,500 cases across the two flagship wines.
