La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is the second wine of Château La Mission Haut-Brion, the historic Pessac-Léognan estate that faces Haut-Brion across the road in the Bordeaux suburbs. It was created with the 1991 vintage and comes mainly from the youngest vines on the property.
Since 2006 the plots of the neighbouring Château La Tour Haut-Brion have been folded into this wine, which lifted its quality considerably. Merlot usually takes the lead in the blend, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon alongside it, and the wine is matured in French oak barrels with a modest proportion of new wood.
The result is a rounder, earlier drinking expression of the La Mission style: dark plum and blackcurrant with smoke, graphite, tobacco and a gravelly, savoury edge. The tannins are supple and the finish long and warm.
