The Kooyong Single Block Ferrous Pinot Noir is grown on 0.79 hectares of gently sloping, 27-year-old vines at Kooyong's Tuerong vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula. As the name suggests, this block's Miocene sedimentary soils hold a far greater proportion of ironstone pebbles than anywhere else on the property, and its free-draining, highly exposed position naturally keeps yields low.
The 2024 vintage began with good winter rain and a steady spring, while a wet December and January required close attention in the vineyard before warm, dry conditions brought an early start to harvest. The fruit was fermented spontaneously in a concrete tank with 10% whole bunches, plunged and pumped over daily for 16 days, then matured for 12 months in French barriques (20% new) with indigenous malolactic fermentation. It was bottled unfined after a single filtration.
Black cherry, pomegranate and dark plum sit alongside brown spice, leaf litter and earthy notes on the nose, with hints of violet and blue fruits and discreet oak. The palate is concentrated and finely composed, with dark fruit, powdery mineral-edged tannins and fresh natural acidity, closing long and savoury with dark cherry, spice and crushed stone. It will reward careful cellaring over the next decade or more.
