Koomilya is a 30-acre vineyard at the end of Amery Road, on the very edge of the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale in South Australia. The site is wedged between the original Upper Tintara vineyard, planted by Dr Alexander Kelly in 1862, and the historic Hope Farm/Seaview vineyard, with the oldest Koomilya vines planted over 100 years ago. Stephen and Fiona Pannell purchased the property in 2012 after Steve had worked with the fruit for years as chief red winemaker at Hardys; the first single-block release followed in 2016.
The site is defined by an unusual soil profile of dark grey, thinly laminated slaty siltstone flecked with ironstone, surrounded by native forest that helps moderate the climate. The vineyard is also the focus of an extensive regeneration program, with native plantings restoring the surrounding creekline and bushland.
The DC Block, named for previous owner Don Cant, faces south-east at around 108 metres elevation and was the first single-block release from Koomilya. The 2022 comes from 50-year-old vines and shows the block's trademark structural depth: dark plum, black bean, sage, five-spice, with a savoury, ferruginous tannin profile and a long, mineral-laced finish that rewards cellaring.
The winemaking is deliberately straightforward to let the site speak: hand-harvested, native yeast fermentation, time on skins, then maturation in large-format, seasoned French oak vats with no new oak. Bottled without fining or filtration with only a small sulfur addition.
