This is Koerner's most serious Riesling, and one of the more unusual in Australia. The fruit comes from the original 1973 plantings on the family vineyard at Watervale, on a south facing slope where only a thin layer of clay loam sits over solid limestone. That rock is the whole point of the wine.
Rather than the stainless steel and early bottling that defines most Clare Riesling, this is fermented and aged for around nine months in a thousand litre ceramic amphora, allowed to go through full malolactic fermentation, then racked to steel where it rests on fine lees for a further nine months. Damon and Maddy Koerner have made Koerner Wine's name on exactly this kind of transparent, low intervention approach since starting out in 2014.
The extended élevage builds a Riesling with real texture and breadth. Lime and grapefruit are joined by beeswax, dried herbs, ginger and a deep, chalky minerality, while the acidity is softened just enough to let the palate spread. It is a wine to drink with food, and one that will grow more interesting for many years yet.
