Joseph Colin is part of one of white Burgundy's most storied families, son of Marc Colin and younger brother of Pierre-Yves Colin. In 2017 he carved out his own holdings to begin an independent domaine, working choice parcels of Chardonnay across Saint-Aubin, Puligny and Chassagne. Saint-Aubin has become a byword for serious, well-priced white Burgundy, and Les Champlots is among its finest Premier Cru sites, perched high on a steep, south to south-west facing slope where cool air and altitude bring lovely tension.
Made entirely from Chardonnay and raised in older oak barrels so the site speaks clearly, this is a precise, mineral white. Look for citrus and orchard fruit, a fine chalky backbone and a long, saline finish, with restraint and energy rather than weight.
Enjoy it with grilled or roasted white fish, scallops, poultry in cream sauce or a wedge of comte. It will also reward a few years in the cellar.
