Puligny-Montrachet is the most finely cut of the great white wine villages of the Côte de Beaune. Shallow soils, a high water table and a tight band of limestone give wines defined by acidity, chalky texture and mineral drive, with none of the easy roundness that comes naturally further north in Meursault.
The nose opens with lemon blossom, green apple and crushed shell, gathering white peach and a light toasted almond note with air. The palate is slender and precise, with a taut acid line, a fine grainy texture through the middle and a long, cool, faintly saline finish.
Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard established the domaine in 1980, a year after meeting over their oenology studies in Dijon, and built it on vineyards inherited from the Gagnard family. The estate covers around eight hectares centred on Chassagne-Montrachet, with the couple now joined by their son Marc-Antonin.
