The Armagh is the wine that made Jim Barry a household name. Jim planted the vineyard on the outskirts of Clare between 1964 and 1968, hand watering the young vines through the drought that followed off the back of an old ute. The hamlet itself was named by Irish settlers after their homeland, and the eight acre block still supplies every bottle.
The first vintage was released in 1985, and the wine has since been recognised as one of the country's true benchmark Shiraz. Clare Valley conditions do much of the work here. Modest rainfall and sharp swings between day and night temperatures deliver small, early ripening bunches with a high skin to juice ratio, which is where the depth of colour, natural acidity and phenolic ripeness come from.
Powerfully expressive and unmistakably Clare, it opens with rich dark fruit, sweet and savoury spice, dark chocolate and a hint of dried herbs. Blackberry and black cherry drive the palate, with liquorice and creamy mocha oak in support and a sinuous, chocolatey structure carrying a very long finish. A wine worth decanting and worth cellaring. Serve it with aged beef, slow roasted lamb or hard cheese.
