The Armagh is Jim Barry Wines' flagship Shiraz and one of Australia's most important red wines — classified as 'Exceptional' in Langton's Classification of Australian Wine. The eight-acre Armagh vineyard in the Clare Valley was planted by the late Jim Barry between 1964 and 1968 and is sited in the fork of Benbournie and McRae Wood Roads, named for the Armagh Creek that runs through its centre. Today the winery is run by Peter Barry alongside third-generation children Tom, Sam and Olivia.
100% Shiraz from the single Armagh vineyard. The 2015 is among the biggest of the recent bottlings — full-bodied, dense and rich, with concentrated blackberry and boysenberry fruit framed by oak spice and chocolate, while remaining savoury and structured. Supple-then-firm tannins and crisp Clare acidity give definition, with decades of cellar potential ahead. 14.6% alcohol.
Hand-harvested over multiple passes for optimum ripeness. Fermented in two-tonne open-top fermenters with heading-down boards and regular rack-and-return. Matured for 14 months in a combination of French and American oak hogsheads (70% new), then released and kept in the Jim Barry cellars prior to its museum release.
