The Armagh is Jim Barry's flagship Shiraz, drawn from a single vineyard at the western edge of the Clare Valley planted by Jim Barry himself in 1968. Named for the rolling hills around it that reminded the early Irish settlers of County Armagh, the site has produced one of Australia's most celebrated single-vineyard Shirazes for more than three decades.
This Museum Release is the 2017 vintage held back at the winery and aged on the estate before release, allowing collectors to taste a fully developed Armagh without the long wait. 2017 was a cooler vintage for the Clare Valley, giving an Armagh that is more medium-bodied and finely poised than the muscular, blockbuster style the wine is sometimes known for.
The wine is bright and complex, with vibrant blueberry, violet and floral spice on the nose moving into hoisin, salami, tobacco leaf and five-spice as the secondary character builds. The palate is juicy, lithe and creamy-textured, with red plum and berry fruit framed by a measured layer of French and American oak and a long, savoury close.
