Les Gouresses is a premier cru vineyard in Montagny, the all-Chardonnay appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise. Jean-Marc Pillot sources this cuvée from a rare plot of very old vines, more than a century old, rooted in marl and limestone soils, and the natural concentration of those ancient vines gives the wine real substance.
Pillot treats this Montagny exactly as he does his Côte de Beaune premier crus, ageing it for around 18 months in previously used French oak barrels. The result is concentrated and textural, with lush orchard fruit, ripe citrus and a hint of honey, all underpinned by a deep, stony minerality.
Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot is based in Chassagne-Montrachet, where Jean-Marc, the fourth generation of his family, has been in charge since 1991 alongside his son Antonin. Production of Les Gouresses is very small, making it a rare chance to taste Montagny from a top Côte de Beaune grower.
