Les Macherelles lies just south of Les Chenevottes in the northern part of Chassagne-Montrachet, close to the Puligny border. Jean-Marc Pillot farms both red and white vines here, and his white holding is a small parcel of a little under 0.3 hectares, first planted in 1951 with a portion replanted in 1988. It was the first of the domaine's vineyards to be converted to organic farming under Antonin Pillot.
This premier cru white combines the finesse of the northern Chassagne sites with a little more depth, offering citrus, white peach and pear alongside notes of fresh almond and a pronounced stony, saline minerality. The palate is focused and long, with the concentration to age gracefully.
The Pillot family has tended vines in Chassagne-Montrachet for four generations, and Jean-Marc has led the domaine since 1991. Whites are picked by hand, fermented slowly in barrel with native yeasts and aged on fine lees, with smaller premier cru cuvées such as this sometimes given a longer stay in barrel before resting in tank prior to bottling.
