Les Chenevottes is Jean-Marc Pillot's northernmost premier cru in Chassagne-Montrachet, sitting at the edge of the village where Chassagne meets Puligny-Montrachet, with Les Macherelles to the south and Les Vergers on the slope above. The domaine works a small holding of just under 0.3 hectares here, planted around 1950, so production of this cuvée is very limited.
Of the Pillot premier crus, Chenevottes leans towards the Puligny side of the family: citrus-driven and silky rather than broad, with lemon, white peach and fresh orchard fruit carried by fine, chalky minerality and a long, saline finish. It has the structure to reward a few years in the cellar.
Jean-Marc Pillot is the fourth generation of his family to tend vines in Chassagne-Montrachet and has run the domaine since 1991, now joined by his son Antonin, with the vineyards in conversion to organic farming. Whites are hand-harvested, fermented slowly in barrel with indigenous yeasts and aged on fine lees for around a year before a further spell in tank, using only a modest share of new oak so the site speaks clearly.
