Les Champs Gain is one of the white premier crus of Chassagne-Montrachet, and Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot farms a tiny parcel of roughly a quarter of a hectare within it. With so few vines, this is one of the smaller bottlings in the domaine's range of Chassagne premier crus.
Expect a fine, energetic style of Chassagne, with citrus, white peach and orchard fruit, subtle floral notes and a chalky, mineral texture that builds through a long, saline finish. It has the depth and acidity to reward patience in the cellar.
Jean-Marc Pillot is the fourth generation of his family in Chassagne-Montrachet and has run the domaine since 1991, now joined by his son Antonin, who has led the move towards organic farming. Whites are hand-harvested, fermented slowly in barrel with indigenous yeasts and aged on fine lees for around a year before a further period in tank, with only a modest proportion of new oak, giving the house its lean, fresh and transparent style.
