From the legendary steep slate terraces of the Lower Mosel, this Grosses Gewachs (Grand Cru) Riesling hails from the Blaufusser Lay parcel within the renowned Uhlen vineyard at Winningen. Crafted by the pioneering Heymann-Lowenstein estate founded by Reinhard and Cornelia Lowenstein and now guided by the next generation under Sarah Lowenstein — this wine is a pure expression of the blue-grey Devon slate that gives the site its name. The vines, many up to 60 years old and ungrafted, cling to breathtakingly steep slopes with gradients of up to 170%, yielding tiny quantities of intensely concentrated fruit.
The 2023 Blaufusser Lay opens with its hallmark cool cassis-mint character, interwoven with bergamot, sage and subtle smoky-mineral nuances. On the palate, the wine feels almost weightless, carried by bright citrus and flint notes with cool herbs and wet stone. The acidity is piquant and lively, with a fine salinity underneath, while the finish extends with chalky tannin structure and lingering mineral tension. This is a wine of remarkable poise and depth that will reward patient cellaring.
Fermented spontaneously and aged for a minimum of ten months on lees in large oak, the Blaufusser Lay embodies Reinhard Lowenstein's uncompromising terroir philosophy where ancient slate is sublimated through the vine into the glass. Certified organic viticulture, hand-harvested, with no enzymes or fining agents used.
