Stolzenberg — meaning "Pride Mountain" — is a VDP.Grosse Lage (Grand Cru-equivalent site) in Hatzenport on the Terrassenmosel, where just 0.6 hectares of vines over 40 years old cling to impossibly steep south-facing slopes of Devonian grey-brown sandy slate. As a Grosses Gewächs, this represents the pinnacle of dry German Riesling classification.
Winemaker Reinhard Löwenstein ferments with wild yeasts only, ages the wine on lees in large wooden barrels until summer, and uses no enzymes or fining agents. The result is a dense, mineral-driven dry Riesling with stone fruit, mirabelle and quince aromas layered with tobacco, orange zest and smoky, gingery spice. The palate is juicy with fine acidity and a long, slate-inflected finish.
