Röttgen is a VDP.Grosse Lage perched on the slopes directly above the village of Winningen on the Terrassenmosel, with gradients reaching an astonishing 170% — among the steepest in Germany. The blue-grey slate soils here are rich in iron oxide, giving the surface a characteristic yellow-brown hue, while vines averaging over 60 years old — some ungrafted — produce a Grosses Gewächs of remarkable warmth and generosity.
Where Heymann-Löwenstein's Uhlen is austere and mineral, and Stolzenberg herbal and salty, Röttgen is the most fruit-forward and approachable of the three GGs. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged on lees in large wooden barrels with no enzymes or fining, this dry Riesling delivers ripe stone fruit with tropical hints, layered over the iron-driven minerality of its extraordinary terroir.
