Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein is one of the great pioneers of the Terraced Mosel, working steep, slate-rich vineyards in and around Winningen on the lower part of the river. Founded by Reinhard and Cornelia Löwenstein, the estate has set the standard for dry, terroir-driven Mosel Riesling, with spontaneous fermentation, no added yeasts, and minimal cellar intervention.
The Hatzenporter Kirchberg is one of the estate's flagship single vineyards and a VDP Grosse Lage, equivalent to a Grand Cru. Already considered one of the best sites in the area in Napoleon's time, it sits on a steep south-facing slope of weathered Devonian slate that gives wines of unusual depth and breadth.
The 2016 Kirchberg is herbal, spicy and distinctly mineral, with restrained yellow fruit, hints of slate, dried meadow and a touch of honeydew melon on the nose. The palate is dense and savoury, layered with earthy and saline notes that show off the dramatic slate terroir, with a long, structured finish built for the cellar.
