Monprivato is one of the most storied single vineyards in Barolo, and it has belonged to the Mascarello family since 1904. The site sits on a classic mid slope in Castiglione Falletto at around 280 metres, and it appears in local land registry records as far back as 1666. Maurizio Mascarello planted it to the Michet strain of Nebbiolo, still regarded as one of the finest selections of the variety, and Mauro Mascarello began bottling the parcel on its own from 1970.
This is Barolo in the traditional mould, built on detail rather than force. Look for rose petal, sour cherry, dried herbs and a savoury undercurrent of tar and truffle, carried by the fine, dusty tannins and bright acidity that mark out the best Castiglione Falletto sites. Long macerations and extended ageing in large oak casks keep the fruit transparent and let the vineyard speak.
The family have been making wine since 1881, first in Monforte d'Alba and then from the cellar at Monchiero, and they have never chased fashion. Monprivato rewards patience, unfolding slowly over many years, though a decant and an hour in the glass will show plenty of its character now.
