Gentle Folk is the small family winery of Gareth and Rainbo Belton in Basket Range, Adelaide Hills. Their vineyards are farmed organically with some biodynamic practices and picked by hand, and the wines are made without additions apart from a splash of sulphur at bottling.
Scary Gully is one of the most distinctive sites in the Adelaide Hills, a windswept ridge in Forest Range at around 620 metres above sea level. Owned by Mike and Jacqui Guerin and farmed by Gentle Folk, the three hectare vineyard was planted in stages from 1984, with Pinot Noir clones including Geisenheim 18, MV6, D5V12 and D2V4.
The soils are shallow and rocky, a light loamy clay over sandstone with plenty of schist and quartz rubble, and the cool, exposed position keeps yields low. The result is a Pinot Noir of tension and detail, with bright red fruit, a stony, mineral edge and fine, lively acidity.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
