Gentle Folk is the small family winery of Gareth and Rainbo Belton in Basket Range, Adelaide Hills. Their vineyards are farmed organically with some biodynamic practices and picked by hand, and the wines are made without additions apart from a splash of sulphur at bottling.
The Basket Range Chardonnay comes from the Somerset vineyard, a steep, north facing slope just across the valley from the Belton family home, surrounded by native forest and catching the afternoon light. The site is only around 2.5 hectares, planted in 1996 at about 440 metres, on clay and sandstone soils run through with schist and quartz.
Whole bunches are pressed and the juice is fermented with wild yeasts before around 11 months in French and Austrian oak, a modest share of it new, with full malolactic fermentation. Expect a mineral, tightly wound Chardonnay with citrus and stone fruit, fine acidity and a long, focused finish.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
