A. Rodda is the label of Adrian Rodda, a Beechworth-based winemaker who trained in the Yarra Valley under Dave Bicknell before building a small, largely one-man operation devoted mainly to Chardonnay. Alongside his Beechworth wines, he makes a series of single-vineyard Chardonnays from other cool Victorian sites, and this bottling comes from the Willow Lake Vineyard at Gladysdale in the Upper Yarra Valley.
Rodda's fruit comes from the Parkinson's Road block at Willow Lake, planted in 1979. Unlike most of the vineyard it faces south, sitting at around 270 metres on brown gradational soils over clay, which helps preserve freshness and natural acidity in the grapes. The fruit is hand-picked and pressed straight to 500 litre French oak puncheons without settling, fermented with its own yeasts, and kept away from malolactic fermentation before around a year on lees.
The result is a poised, tightly wound Upper Yarra Chardonnay, with white nectarine, peach, grapefruit and lemon over hints of hazelnut and gentle toasty oak. The palate is silky yet nervy, with a firm, chalky line and a long, saline finish. It drinks well young and has the structure to age.
