Les Santenots is one of Burgundy's more curious appellations. The vineyard actually lies within the commune of Meursault, but when it is planted to Pinot Noir the wine is sold as Volnay premier cru, a quirk of history that has survived every attempt at tidying up the map.
The wines from here are firmer and broader than the Volnay village norm, gaining flesh and density from the deeper soils while keeping the perfume the commune is known for. Look for dark cherry and plum alongside the usual red fruits, with liquorice, sweet spice and a savoury earthiness. Tannins have real grip, and the finish is long and structured.
Domaine Yvon Clerget has been in Volnay since 1268 and is now run by Thibaud Clerget, the twenty eighth generation, in charge since the 2015 vintage. He trained with Henri Boillot, at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon and with Charles Van Canneyt at Hudelot-Noellat. This is one to cellar, or to decant and pour alongside beef, lamb or game.
