From the esteemed cellars of Domaine Rougeot Pere et Fils in Meursault, the 2023 Les Charmes Premier Cru is a pure Chardonnay drawn from one of the village's most celebrated vineyards. Managed by Pierre-Henri Rougeot since 2010, the domaine works 13 hectares from an 18th-century stone cellar originally built for the Hospices de Beaune. The estate has been certified organic since 2018 and follows a minimal-intervention, low-sulphur philosophy that lets the terroir speak clearly through each cuvee.
Les Charmes sits on limestone and marl soils with ideal south to south-east exposure, and the vines — planted by Pierre-Henri's grandfather in the late 1950s — deliver concentrated, caviar-sized berries even in difficult seasons. The grapes are hand-harvested into small crates to minimise handling. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels (20% new), followed by 18 months of maturation on fine lees without batonnage. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with only minimal sulphur addition.
In the glass, this Premier Cru shows a profound gold colour and a complex aromatic profile of almond, pear and fresh apricot. The palate is ample, full-bodied and rich with fine acidity and pronounced minerality, leading to a long, elegant finish. This is Meursault at its most elegant — a wine that will reward several years of cellaring and drink beautifully over a decade.
