The Vieux Clos du Château de Cîteaux is the emblematic wine of this domaine and its most personal: a 1.7 hectare walled monopole planted by Philippe Bouzereau's father, held entirely by the family and enclosed within the grounds of the château itself. The soils are deep and stony, a mix of limestone and clay, and the combination of that depth with the shelter of the old walls gives a Meursault of unusual completeness for a village-level wine.
Aromas of ripe pear, white peach and lemon curd sit over toasted hazelnut and a suggestion of honey. The palate is broad and generously textured, with a creamy mid-palate and a firm mineral spine that stops the richness from spreading, closing dry, nutty and long.
Château de Cîteaux stands in the heart of Meursault within what was once a Cistercian vineyard enclosure, its vaulted cellars dug by the monks in the thirteenth century. Philippe Bouzereau, ninth generation of a Meursault growing family, has run the 18 hectare estate since 2006 with his brother Charles, farming a mosaic of parcels from Aloxe-Corton to Chassagne-Montrachet.
