Les Perrières is widely regarded as the finest premier cru in Meursault and the site most often put forward for promotion to grand cru. The name comes from the old stone quarries that once worked this part of the slope, and the shallow, rocky limestone soils left behind are what set the wine apart: less flesh than Charmes, more cut, and a mineral character that takes years to fully unwind.
The aromatics are tightly wound at first, offering lemon oil, white flowers and a distinct flinty, struck-match edge before richer notes of hazelnut and white peach emerge. The palate is firm and beautifully structured, with real density behind an almost crystalline core of acidity, and the finish is long, stony and persistent.
Philippe Bouzereau farms 18 hectares from the Château de Cîteaux in the middle of Meursault, the ninth generation of his family here and at the helm since 2006 with his brother Charles. The cellars beneath the property were built by Cistercian monks in the thirteenth century, and the approach above ground is deliberately restrained, with hand picking, gentle pressing and fermentation on native yeasts.
