Les Charmes is the largest of Meursault's premier crus and the one that most readily gives you what people mean when they talk about the village. It sits on the lower part of the slope where the soils are deeper and less stony than at Perrières above it, and the result is a wine of width and generosity rather than severity, approachable earlier than its neighbours without giving up class.
Ripe yellow peach, quince and lemon curd lead the aromatics, with hazelnut, butter and a touch of toasted grain underneath. The palate is round and creamy, coating the mouth with soft orchard fruit, and a line of citrus acidity keeps the whole thing from turning heavy before a long, gently nutty finish.
Domaine Philippe Bouzereau operates from the Château de Cîteaux, a property the family acquired to serve as the heart of the estate, set within an old Cistercian enclosure in the middle of Meursault. Philippe, the ninth generation here, has led the 18 hectares since 2006 with his brother Charles, favouring a light touch in the vineyard so the vines develop naturally.
