Chassagne-Montrachet at village level is one of the more reliable ways into white Burgundy, and in the hands of a grower whose entire holding sits inside the commune it can taste remarkably like the premier crus above it. The style here is firm and citrus-led, with the limestone always apparent and the fruit kept in check.
Grapefruit, lemon pith and white flowers open the nose, with a light nutty note and a touch of struck flint developing behind. The palate is crisp and cleanly drawn, with a chalky grip through the middle, bright acidity and a dry, mineral finish that stays fresh to the end.
Marc-Antonin Blain set up his own estate in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet in 2009, working vines that have been in his family since 1683 and which his grandfather entrusted to him a year before his death. He is the son of Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard of Domaine Blain-Gagnard, and he continues to work alongside them while bottling under his own name.
