Clos Saint-Jean sits at the northern end of Chassagne-Montrachet, tucked above the village on the Saint-Aubin side of the commune. It was long planted mostly to Pinot Noir and has increasingly been given over to Chardonnay, and the white wines that come from its stony upper reaches are notably firm and mineral, with a savoury edge that distinguishes them from the richer sites to the south.
The nose is cool and precise, offering lemon, greengage and crushed stone with a hint of white pepper and toasted nut. The palate is tightly structured and driven by acidity, with a chalky texture through the middle and a long, dry, distinctly stony finish.
Marc-Antonin Blain has bottled under his own name since establishing his estate in the heart of Chassagne in 2009, working vines his family has held since 1683. He grew up in the cellar at Domaine Blain-Gagnard, founded by his parents Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard.
