A village-level Gevrey-Chambertin from Louis Billard, a young Burgundian vigneron originally from La Rochepot in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, where his family has been making wine for five generations at Domaine Billard Père et Fils. Having spent the 2018 and 2019 vintages working at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti alongside Aubert de Villaine, followed by stints at Domaine G. Roumier, Newton Johnson in South Africa and By Farr in Australia, Louis released his first wines under his own label with the 2022 vintage, sourcing fruit from across the Côte d'Or.
100% Pinot Noir grown on rocky soils with heavy red clay, from vines averaging 55 years of age cropped at 35 hectolitres per hectare. Expect a lifted, pure-fruited expression of Gevrey, with aromas of red and dark cherry, raspberry, subtle spice and the savoury tension typical of the appellation, leading into a fine-boned palate with supple tannins and a long, mineral-edged finish.
Fermented in stainless steel with 17 days of maceration and 50% whole clusters. The wine was then transferred into 228-litre Remond and ex-Domaine de la Romanée-Conti François Frères barrels with medium-heavy toast, 30% of which were new and the remainder 1 to 3 years old. Racked once by gravity and very gently filtered, with only light sulfuring at bottling.
