Les Clos is the largest and most celebrated of the seven Chablis grands crus, occupying the heart of the steep south-west facing slope above the town. It is the benchmark against which the others are measured, giving the most powerful and longest-lived wines in the appellation, and it is also the slowest to reveal itself.
The aromatics are deep and slow to emerge, moving from lemon oil and white peach to almond, honey and a pronounced smoky, flinty minerality. The palate is dense and broad-shouldered for Chablis, with layers of citrus and orchard fruit built on an unyielding mineral frame, closing with a very long, saline, stony finish. Give it time.
Laroche has been in Chablis since 1850 and has aged its finest wines for generations in the cellars of the Obédiencerie, a former monastery in the centre of town where the canons of Saint Martin of Tours were making wine in the Middle Ages. The building is a listed Historic Monument, with its vineyards first documented in 1128.
