Corton is the only grand cru for red wine in the Côte de Beaune, a great domed hill whose climats fan out around its flanks. Le Rognet sits on the eastern side above Ladoix-Serrigny, where iron rich limestone and a good deal of stone in the soil give Pinot Noir a firm, mineral backbone. This is the summit of Domaine Guilbert-Gillet's range.
Expect a grand cru of real scale and poise. Dark cherry, blackcurrant and wild bramble are layered with violets, iron and warm spice, the tannins are firm but polished, and the finish is deep and persistent. This is a wine to lay down, and it will reward a decade or more in a good cellar.
