The initials on the label stand for the two parcels that make up the blend, La Côte and Carementrant, both sitting on the western flank of the Roche de Vergisson. These are among the finest chalky hillsides in Pouilly-Fuissé, steep and well drained, and the west-facing aspect gives a slower afternoon ripening that shows up as tension in the glass.
The nose is taut and stony, with lemon, green apple and white blossom ahead of toasted hazelnut and a smoky, flinty edge. The palate is firmly structured and highly concentrated, with a saline chalky grip running the length of it and a long, dry, distinctly mineral finish.
Guffens-Heynen is based at Pierreclos, where Jean-Marie Guffens and Maine Heynen have farmed since the late 1970s across roughly 5.5 hectares of Chardonnay, complemented by these parcels in Pouilly-Fuissé. Purity, precision and minerality are the words that follow the domaine around, and they are well earned.
