Domaine Gauby Les Calcinaires Rouge 2024 750ml
Les Calcinaires Rouge is Domaine Gauby's most approachable red and a benchmark for what the Roussillon can do when it is farmed with care. Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Carignan are grown on limestone, clay and schist around the village of Calce, on younger vines than the estate's flagship cuvées.
The Gauby family works around forty five hectares of high vineyards here, where altitude and the winds coming off the Pyrenees temper the Mediterranean climate. Gérard Gauby was one of the first growers in the region to farm organically and biodynamically, and the estate has planted trees and hedges among the vines to encourage a genuinely living landscape. Fermentation uses native yeasts and the wine is made with minimal handling.
It is a red of freshness and lift rather than weight. Red and dark berries, garrigue herbs and crushed pepper sit over a fine, stony core, the tannins are supple and the finish is cool and savoury. Serve it slightly chilled with grilled meats, roast lamb or a hearty vegetable dish.
