Les Cazetiers occupies a privileged position high on the Gevrey-Chambertin slope above the village, sitting between two of the commune's most exalted premier crus in Clos Saint-Jacques and Combe aux Moines. Along with those two and Lavaux Saint-Jacques it is regarded as one of the very best premier crus in Gevrey. Domaine Faiveley own roughly half the vineyard.
The plot spans two distinct terroirs, and that duality is the key to the wine. Higher up, whitish marl and limestone give finesse and mineral lift; lower down, deeper brown and red clay bring power and richness. Oak woods above shelter the site and warm its mesoclimate, while rocky gravels and cobbles keep the drainage sharp.
The result is a Gevrey of both authority and precision: black cherry, cassis and violet over liquorice, dried herb and a stony, faintly gamey depth, with firm, finely grained tannins and a long savoury finish. Domaine Faiveley was founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley and is now in its seventh generation under Erwan and Eve Faiveley, farming across twelve grand crus and twenty two premier crus. This ages comfortably for fifteen years and more.
