Sous Frétille is one of the eight premier cru sites of Pernand-Vergelesses, sitting just north of the hill of Corton on a south-east facing slope high above the village at around three hundred metres. Only Chardonnay is planted here, on clay and limestone soils, and Domaine Dugat-Py's parcel dates back to vines put in the ground in 1970.
Better known for the old vine reds of Gevrey-Chambertin, Dugat-Py brings the same exacting approach to its whites. The vineyards are farmed organically, worked by horse in places and treated only with organic preparations. The wine is fermented in barrel and left on its lees for around eighteen to twenty months, with a generous share of new oak, before bottling.
The result is a white of real presence. Citrus zest, ripe pear and white flowers are lifted by a pastry cream richness from the extended lees ageing, while tangy acidity and a chalky, structuring grip keep everything taut. Give it a few years and it will unwind into something quite complete.
