Clos des Lambrays is a walled Grand Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis, first mentioned in the Cîteaux Abbey archives around 1365 and granted Grand Cru status in 1981. Domaine des Lambrays holds 8.66 hectares, almost the entire clos, on an east-facing, triangular slope of clay and limestone. Roughly 70 percent of the Pinot Noir vines were planted between 1898 and 1935.
The estate has belonged to LVMH since 2014 and has been directed by Jacques Devauges since 2019. Under his stewardship the vineyard moved to organic farming in 2019 and biodynamics in 2020, and the clos is now worked as 11 distinct parcels, each picked and vinified separately before being reunited.
2021 was a challenging vintage. Spring frost cost the domaine around half its crop and halted the vines' growth for several weeks, and it was only the estate's second year farming biodynamically. The small harvest that remained was carefully protected, and the wine was fermented with a high proportion of whole bunches.
The result is a notably elegant, fine-boned Clos des Lambrays, showing red cherry, rose and spice with silky tannins and a fresh, mineral finish.
