Corton Clos du Roi is a historic walled parcel sitting above Corton-Bressandes on the great hill of Corton, and it has long been regarded as the most complete of the Corton climats. Domaine de la Pousse d'Or farm three hectares of it, with vines planted in 1979 and 1987 on a mix of clay and limestone.
The wine is full, broad and intense, which is Corton in a nutshell. Black cherry, plum and cassis are joined by liquorice, sweet spice, dried rose and a deep savoury note of earth and iron. The palate is powerfully built with substantial but well polished tannin, and the finish is long, mineral and slow to fade.
Fruit is fully destemmed and fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature controlled tanks, then aged eighteen months in French barrique with around thirty per cent new wood, and bottled without fining or filtration. Patrick Landanger took over this famous Volnay estate in 1997 and expanded it considerably, adding the Corton parcels and later a run of Cote de Nuits vineyards. Cellar this for a decade, then decant it well and serve with beef, game or truffled dishes.
