Domaine Daniel Bouland — today run with his daughter Mélanie, after whom this wine is named — is one of the great cult producers of the Beaujolais. From a small 7-hectare estate based in the hamlet of Corcelette in Morgon, Bouland makes parcel-specific, old-vine Gamay across Morgon, Chiroubles and the Côte de Brouilly. Many of the vines are centenarians and farmed in traditional gobelet form.
Cuvée Mélanie is drawn from a small, steep half-hectare plot on the slopes of Mont Brouilly — a classic Côte de Brouilly cuvée, 100% Gamay. Expect fine, mineral, fruit-driven Gamay with aromas of red berries, black cherry, spice and violet, lifted by the savoury, almost wild minerality of the blue volcanic rock soils. The palate is dense, supple and harmonious, with the grippy yet refined tannins that mark Bouland's style.
Meticulously hand-picked from hand-tended, gobelet-trained vines. Fermented in whole bunches over around two weeks, then raised in foudres or tanks for up to nine months with minimal sulphur additions.
