Daniel Bouland's Chiroubles 'Chatenay' comes from a 0.65-hectare parcel on the steep, forest-sheltered Chatenay slope, where granite and yellow sandstone soils give this Beaujolais cru its hallmark aromatic lift. The vines range from 35 to 45 years old, north-facing and handled with the same meticulous old-school approach Daniel brings to his better-known Morgon sites.
Expect bright red and blue fruit, fine-grained texture and a floral, lightly peppery perfume. The palate carries real intensity — serious, structured Gamay that sits a long way from the simple fruity cliché of the appellation. Fermented using traditional methods and aged around 8 months in vats to preserve transparency and freshness.
A benchmark Chiroubles that drinks beautifully now but has the balance to cellar for a decade or more.
