Domaine Bruno Colin was founded after the 2003 division of the Michel Colin-Deléger estate in Chassagne-Montrachet, with Bruno releasing his first vintage in 2004. He tends parcels across Chassagne, Puligny and Santenay and has built a reputation for clear, finely balanced Chardonnay.
La Maltroie lies just below the village of Chassagne, and Bruno's white comes from old Chardonnay vines in the Ez Crets section of the climat on clay and limestone soils, with some plantings dating back to the 1950s. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, then the wine spends around a year in 350-litre casks with a modest share of new oak, followed by several months in stainless steel before bottling.
Compared with the more chiselled Les Vergers, La Maltroie tends to be broader and more generous, with ripe orchard fruit, citrus and a creamy, layered texture held together by fresh acidity. 2018 was a hot, sunny vintage that delivered healthy, ample crops and whites of real richness, and this wine shows plenty of fruit depth with a long, saline finish.
