Grésigny is one of the finest white wine sites in Rully and among the best premier crus of the Côte Chalonnaise. The vineyard sits on limestone-rich ground that gives Chardonnay grown here a firmness and a mineral clarity closer in character to the Côte de Beaune than its address might suggest, and the wines carry age well.
Aromas of lemon, white peach and acacia open onto a subtle nutty note. The palate is precise and finely structured, with a chalky grain running through it, a core of ripe citrus fruit and a long, dry, distinctly stony finish. A little bottle age brings out the more savoury, honeyed side of the wine.
The de Villaine family farms three appellations in the Côte Chalonnaise: Bouzeron for Aligoté, Rully for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and Mercurey for Pinot Noir. Aubert and Pamela de Villaine own the domaine and their nephew Pierre de Benoist runs it, working vineyards that have been certified organic since 1986 and are now the subject of biodynamic experimentation.
