Domaine Denis Mortet is one of the great names of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy's Cote de Nuits, founded by Denis Mortet in 1991 and today guided by his son Arnaud. This Fixin Vieilles Vignes is a red wine made entirely from Pinot Noir, drawn from old vines in the neighbouring village of Fixin at the northern end of the Cote de Nuits, where black clay and limestone soils give the wine its backbone.
It is a plush, vivacious style with a crunchy core of black cherry and a savoury thread of liquorice. The old vines lend depth and concentration, while careful ageing in oak frames the fruit without overwhelming it, leaving a wine that is generous yet finely poised.
Decant and serve at a cool room temperature alongside roast duck, braised beef or mushroom dishes. A few years in the cellar will reward those who can wait, though its charm is already plain to see.
