Delirium Nocturnum is the dark counterpart to the famous Delirium Tremens, brewed by Brouwerij Huyghe in Melle, East Flanders. Founded in 1906, Huyghe is known for its pink elephant emblem, and Nocturnum is its take on the Belgian strong dark ale, brewed with a blend of roasted and chocolate malts, quality hops and a touch of coriander.
It pours a deep chocolate brown with a creamy, stable head. The bouquet offers caramel, freshly brewed coffee and dark chocolate, with spicy touches of liquorice and coriander alongside dark fruit such as dates. The palate opens with a gentle warmth before moving into a refined bitterness from the roasted malts, and the finish settles into a harmonious balance of sweet, bitter and subtly sour notes.
This is a beer for slow, contemplative sipping. Serve lightly chilled in a tulip glass alongside rich stews, roast meats, aged cheeses or chocolate desserts.
