Gouden Carolus Classic Strong Dark Ale 330ml
Gouden Carolus Classic Strong Dark Ale 330ml
Gouden Carolus Classic traces its heritage to the rich brewing traditions of Mechelen. Historically, each Belgian city boasted its own breweries and distinctive beers, with Mechelen's residents favoring "den Mechelschen Bruynen." As the capital of the Netherlands at that time, Mechelen had an esteemed brewer's guild dedicated to crafting superior beers for the Emperor. Historical chronicles of Mechelen note that the Grand Imperial Beer, named "Gouden Carolus" after Emperor Charles' golden coins, was predominantly consumed during foxhunts, as it invigorated both riders and horses, ensuring the hunt proceeded in an optimal atmosphere.
This esteemed "Grand Imperial Beer" continues to be produced by Het Anker Brewery in Mechelen. Its dark, meticulously balanced caramel and aromatic malts, combined with traditional high fermentation methods, yield a beer that marries the warmth of wine with the crispness of beer. This unique profile makes Gouden Carolus Classic particularly well-suited for pairing with culinary delights such as stews, game, pâtes, and even sabayon.
In recognition of its excellence, Gouden Carolus Classic was awarded the title of “World’s Best Dark Ale” by the World Beer Awards in 2012, adding to its legacy of prestigious accolades.
