Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Grand Cru Classé de Graves at Martillac in Pessac-Léognan, farmed by the Cathiard family since 1990. The vineyard lies in a single block on a Günz gravel plateau, the classic terroir of the appellation, and the estate has its own cooperage, built in 1995, which supplies the majority of its barrels.
The red is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with a substantial share of Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is matured for around eighteen months in French oak, roughly 60 per cent of it new and made on site, which knits the oak closely into the fruit.
Expect dark berries and cassis wrapped in smoke, graphite, toasted spice and the gravelly, savoury signature of Pessac-Léognan. The tannins are polished and the finish long, giving a wine that is approachable after a few years yet capable of ageing well beyond a decade.
