Château Musar is Lebanon's most celebrated winery, founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar in Ghazir, north of Beirut, with its vineyards sited in the high-altitude Bekaa Valley. Under the stewardship of his son Serge Hochar from 1959 until his death in 2014, Musar became internationally famous for its singular, age-worthy red wines. The estate is today run by Serge's sons, Gaston and Marc Hochar.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan from old bush-vines in the Bekaa Valley. Musar is known for its unique, slow-evolving style — expect complex aromas of dark berries, dried herbs, spice, leather, tobacco and the distinctive earthy, savoury character that sets these wines apart. The 2000 is now entering its mature phase, with layered secondary and tertiary flavours.
Made in a traditional, non-interventionist style. The varietal components are fermented separately in cement vats and matured for 12 months in French oak from the forest of Nevers, before blending. The finished wine rests further in cement tanks, is bottled unfined and unfiltered, and then ages for a further four years in the Chateau's deep stone cellars before release — seven years in total from harvest to market.
